The new S-Class Cabriolet is the first open-top flagship four-seater from Mercedes-Benz since 1971. It offers a distinctive, sensual and exclusive design, the cutting-edge technology of the S-Class and a comprehensive warmth and wind protection concept which includes intelligent climate control for convertibles.
With its sensual and pure design idiom, the new S-Class Cabriolet is one of the most beautiful and exclusive S-Class cars of all time. It embodies modern luxury in a very special way and is an expression of both effortless superiority and progressivity.
In design terms the highlight is the sculptural shaping of the dashboard, with its extensive areas of wood or carbon fibre trim. The hand-crafted quality of the finish provides the perfect framework for a level of comfort that will relieve you of every stress or strain and bring some exciting new insights.
The new S-Class Cabriolet is distinguished with the typical proportions of a large, sporty coupé, the long bonnet with its powerdomes, the elegant roof line and the frameless side windows. But we wanted more. A technology leader, a new symbol for modern luxury. the continuous expanse of window, without a B-pillar, gives the car an elegantly flowing silhouette that remains unrivalled to this day. The frameless side windows are surrounded by fine chrome.
Performance
The V8 engine of the S 500 Cabriolet has an output of 335 kW (455 hp). The displacement stands at 4,663 cc and the engine produces peak torque of 700 Newton metres from 1,800 rpm. In combined mode the Cabriolet gets by on 9.1-8.5 litres per 100 km, with CO₂ emissions of 212-199 g/km.
Eight cylinders – no other engine gets under the skin in quite the same way. As the latest model to follow in this tradition, the S 500 rolls out an unmistakable, irresistible carpet of sound. A specially developed sound control system ensures that this effect comes into play as soon as the car starts or is accelerated sharply, while during normal driving the engine remains completely restrained. In acoustic terms, it thus melds the emotional appeal of a sports car with the comfort of an S-Class to unique effect.
AIRMATIC with variable damper control – more ride comfort, more vehicle dynamics
In combination with variable damper control, the air suspension system ensures ride comfort and dynamic handling at a very high level. The damping at each wheel is adapted to the current driving situation and road surface condition. This is done rapidly and precisely using two separate valves for the compression and rebound of the dampers. The occupants enjoy a soft basic suspension setup and the secure feeling of high handling stability as speed increases. Hardening of the spring rate, for example on bends and when braking, effectively reduces rolling and pitching movements. With the "Comfort" and "Sport" settings, AIRMATIC can be configured for more comfort or sportiness. Thanks to the pneumatic all-round self-levelling suspension, the vehicle maintains a constant level irrespective of the load. The suspension level can be raised by 30 mm to increase ground clearance. At high speeds the suspension is automatically lowered by up to 20 mm, helping to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve handling stability.
The integral safety concept from Mercedes-Benz
Like the S-Class Sedan and Coupe, the new Cabriolet is available with numerous new assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and safer. Intelligent Drive systems include PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, Brake Assist BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus.
The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system has been upgraded to PRE-SAFE® PLUS. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn following traffic by flashing the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. When a danger of collision persists, the system can “lock” the brakes of the stationary vehicle prior to a rear-end collision and activate the PRE-SAFE® belt tensioners immediately before impact.
The S-Class Cabriolet take stock of their surroundings more intensively, precisely and quickly than any other car in this class. A stereo camera can detect objects and pedestrians crossing in front of the car in spatial terms and calculate their path. Intelligent algorithms evaluate this information from a wide monitoring area to detect and undertake a three-dimensional evaluation of vehicles approaching, in front and crossing, as well as of pedestrians and various types of road markings. Numerous safety and assistance systems, the availability of which depends upon the vehicle’s precise specification, can assess a wide range of traffic situations virtually of their own accord, analyse these and trigger supporting measures.
The Driving Assistance package Plus is made up of a perfectly coordinated cluster of safety and assistance systems: this helps to take the strain off the driver, to reduce any risk of accident and to improve protection for the car’s occupants as well as for other road users. Brake Assist BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist and PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection can reduce the risk of accidents at junctions, rear-end collisions and collisions with pedestrians, particularly in urban traffic. Active Lane keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist provide assistance if the vehicle leaves its lane unintentionally or during lane changes if there is a danger of collision with other vehicles.
Features: Enhanced climate comfort.
The automatic climate control system with 2 climate zones provides an individual feel-good climate on board. In addition, three climate modes, including temperature of the front footwells are individually selectable for the left and right front seat, are available to adapt the character of the airflow to the personal preferences. THERMOTRONIC automatically maintains the desired climate in each of the zones. 12 Sensors monitor e.g. roof status, inside and outside temperature, sunlight, air quality, humidity and dew point. Climate is controlled fully automatically. This means the driver does not need to select a mode for closed or open top, nor is it necessary to save a temperature setting for these driving conditions.
Information is shown on a stunningly high-resolution 31.2 cm colour display screen. The ideal complement to this system is the head-up display, which projects important information as a virtual image directly into the driver’s line of sight. The display is perceived by the driver as floating above the bonnet about two metres away.
Masterful manoeuvring.
Parking and manoeuvring with realistic all-round visibility is made possible by the 360-degree camera system and its four interlinked close-range cameras. A bird’s-eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings can be displayed on the COMANND Online screen. Obstacles below the window line are also visible to the driver. This is helpful, for example, when approaching kerbs. One camera is mounted in the radiator grille at the front; there is one in each exterior mirror and one in the centre of the boot lid. Various views additionally show guide lines to make parking easier. The rear camera is protected against soiling by the large Mercedes star on the boot lid. When the 360° camera is activated, the star tilts up electrically.
